Spaceworks Tacoma is a creative, maybe even utopian, response to economic hard times. The goal of Spaceworks is to transform empty storefronts and vacant space into dynamic points of interest through artistic energy and enterprise, making Tacoma a stronger, more active city.

Spaceworks is a joint initiative of the City of Tacoma, Shunpike, and the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce. In exchange for creatively activating unused spaces, artists are temporarily provided no- and low-cost rent, exposure and business consultation. There are three tracks available for participation: 

1) Artscapes temporarily places visual art installations in interior window storefronts.

2)  Special Projects offers dedicated practicing artists the chance to pursue projects and develop work in any discipline for up to six months. This could include individual artist residencies, but preference will be given to especially active projects. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and are reviewed as spaces become available.

3) Creative Enterprise provides designers, crafters, consultants and other fledgling entrepreneurs the chance to test new products and services in a physical space for up to six months. Applications for this track are accepted on a rolling basis and are reviewed as spaces become available.
